Dan Walker and Adrian Chiles discuss Strictly experiences

Adrian Chiles has admitted his family was “horrified” when he told them he was going on Strictly Come Dancing.

The Radio 5 presenter, 54, will be strutting his stuff on the show’s Christmas special alongside new professional dancer Jowita Przystal.

Discussing his family’s reaction when he told them he’d signed up for the show, Adrian said: “They were absolutely, to a man and woman, horrified!

“Even though my mum’s a massive fan of the show, she said, ‘Oh God!’”

Despite their initial reaction, Team Adrian quickly got on-board as he says as soon as they saw his training video, they thought he “might not be so horrendous after all”.

Adrian will be performing an American smooth to a rendition of White Christmas by Otis Redding.

He confessed he “broke wind” the first time he ever lifted Jowita during rehearsals, adding: “She was very polite and pretended not to notice, and I pretended it was my shoes on the floor!”

The Polish-born dancer, 27, said she ‘couldn’t have asked for a better partner’ than Adrian, adding what a “gentleman” he was.

Speaking to The Sun, she said: “The first day I met him he was so stressed, he told me that he can’t dance and he’s terrible.

“But hour by hour, I found out that actually he can dance.”

During his training, Adrian was forced to run out after becoming sick from all the spinning that had been included in the pair’s routine.

Jowita said: “I was really worried but he got it in the end. The sickness went away, thankfully.”

Adrian admits that 11 days ago he would have been “absolutely terrified” and “full of regret” for doing the show adding that he’d have ‘wanted to leave the country’.

He says he wouldn’t have missed it

But now he’s proud he took part saying: “I wouldn’t have missed it, it’s been a real privilege, and I’m not just saying that, to meet Jowita, work intensively on something and just focus on that.”

However while he’s made peace with his performance Adrian did say there’s no way he’ll be tuning in when the show airs.

He said: “I’ll go for a walk when the Strictly Christmas Special is on. I can’t stand watching myself.”

Joining Adrian on the lineup is The Repair Shop’s Jay Blades, presenter Moira Stuart, First Dates star Fred Sirieix pop star Anne Marie and presenter and actress Mel Giedroyc.

Giving his verdict on his competitors, The One Show star admitted that when the famous faces came together in London to practice the group numbers that they “all looked as nervous” and compared them to “shy kids starting at a new school.”

The Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special airs on Christmas Day on BBC One at 5:10pm.
