Former Manchester City star Micah Richards has brutally mocked Match of the Day host Gary Lineker with a cheeky Twitter post following his old club’s thrilling win over Leicester City.
The Foxes and City scored nine goals between them in a Boxing Day classic, with Pep Guardiola’s men ultimately going on to win 6-3 having been four goals up inside 25 minutes.
It would have been a great watch for Richards, who spent a decade in City’s senior team, winning the Premier League, the FA Cup and the League Cup.
Lineker meanwhile would have been hiding behind the sofa while watching his boyhood Leicester be demolished by City before staging an ultimately unsuccessful comeback to drop to tenth in the table.
HAVE YOUR SAY! Is Manchester City’s win over Leicester the best Boxing Day game in Premier League history? Comment below.
Kevin de Bruyne opened the scoring at the Etihad Stadium after just five minutes, controlling Fernandinho’s hoisted pass into the area before finding the back of the net with a precise finish.
Riyad Mahrez doubled the hosts’ lead nine minutes later from the penalty spot after Youri Tielemans hauled down Aymeric Laporte at a corner.
Things got even worse for Leicester and Lineker soon after that spot-kick when Ilkay Gundogan tucked home the rebound when Kasper Schmeichel palmed Joao Cancelo’s cross into his path.
Raheem Sterling then made it the perfect opening to the game for City when he scored a penalty himself after Tielemans had chopped him down in the box.
Leicester kept the score to 4-0 at half-time and after the break, Brendan Rodgers’ men launched a remarkable comeback.
James Maddison capitalised on a slip by Oleksandr Zinchenko to race clear, exchange passes with Kelechi Iheanacho and slot home to pull back the first goal.
Iheanacho was involved in the Foxes’ second goal too, sending Adomela Lookman clear to fire past Ederson.
The striker then cut the deficit to just one goal when he scored from close range after Ederson had tipped a Maddison shot onto the bar.
But Laporte rose highest to head in Mahrez’s corner five minutes later, but Sterling made sure of the win by turning in Ruben Dias’ knockdown.
Richards was delighted to see the team he served with such distinction hold on to claim the thrilling win.
And the former full-back and now Match of the Day pundit took the opportunity to poke fun at Lineker.
Lineker traditionally releases the running order for each week’s show following the final game of the day.
And Richards made a cheeky enquiry as to the running order for the Boxing Day edition of Match of the Day.
“Will Man City be on first tonight? Asking for a friend!!!” he asked Lineker on Twitter.
Lineker was less than pleased with Richards’ question, responding with an X-rated emoji, though City boss Guardiola was delighted his side hung on.
“It was a Boxing Day game. It was a nice game to watch and three more points,” the City boss told BBC Sport.
“The quality of players we have produced this amount of actions to score goals. No manager and tactics can solve it without the quality.
“It was weird. Even at 4-0 in the first half, every time they had the ball they arrived in the final third delivering good passes.”
