Next Doctor Who: All the rumours and bookies favourites to replace Jodie Whittaker

Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker says she felt ‘grief-ridden’ on her final days of filming the series.

The actress, 39, opened up about her emotional final scenes for the BBC1 show in a new interview.

Jodie became the show’s first ever Time Lord in the show’s history in 2017.

The regeneration episode is set to air in autumn this year, but it is not yet known who will take over her role when she eventually steps down.

She told Entertainment Weekly: “I’ve shot my version of regen[eration], and it was singularly the most emotional day on set I think I’ve ever had.

“It’s a really bizarre feeling, because it’s the best time I’ve ever had on a job, and I made the decision to leave it, so it’s a really strange thing to do to yourself.”

Jodie added: “It was a wonderfully-celebratory-slash-grief-ridden day that I could spend with the family that I’d made. I suppose the best thing about it is that the episodes are still on. So until they’re off, I don’t have to really get my head around the fact that it’s not my part!”

Doctor Who fans will see plenty of Jodie next year – with the Yorkshire star’s last episode only set to air in autumn 2022.

Jodie’s swansong also coincides with the celebrations planned to mark the BBC’s 100th anniversary.

“Having been in charge of the TARDIS since filming began in 2017, showrunner Chris Chibnall and Jodie Whittaker are set to leave the most famous police box on Earth – and the Universe,” the show’s official Twitter account announced last month.

“Having faced many perilous journeys battling some of the most feared monsters throughout space and time, it’s the final instalment for the Thirteenth Doctor.”

Teasing fans, they added: “This epic blockbuster special will see the Doctor fight evil across the galaxy one last time but just who will she come up against in her final battle before the Doctor regenerates once more…”
