And if recent reports are anything to go by, Guardiola could be seeking improvements in the midfield department.

It comes after Chelsea forward Romelu Lukaku confirmed he had an offer to join Manchester City.

Lukaku reveals offer

City are widely reported to be in the market for a new striker with the likes of Harry Kane and Erling Haaland thought to be near the top of their shortlist.

But they may not be in this situation at all – had Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku accepted an offer to join the club.

Sky Italia [via Manchester Evening News ] reports Lukaku turned down a move to the Etihad after his first year with Inter Milan in 2020.

In an interview with Sky Italia, Lukaku said: “After the first year, I turned down an offer from Manchester City that was higher than Chelsea’s current one, because I didn’t want to..

“It was not the time, it was the first year, I wanted to do something good for Inter because they saved my career.

“I was in a deep hole at Manchester United, things weren’t going well. I was a big investment for Inter and we did great things together.”

Barca swap on cards

Pep Guardiola wants to swap Spanish centre-back Aymeric Laporte for Barcelona defender Frenkie de Jong, it has been reported.

Spanish outlet El Nacional claims that Barcelona would struggle to raise the funds for a transfer fee for Laporte amid their current financial struggles.

According to the report, Guardiola’s alternative to the money is Frenkie de Jong and he would sign off on Laporte’s departure “if the Barca footballer enters the operation”.

It remains to be seen whether the club could persuade De Jong to move to the Premier League, however, with the report adding he has “has no intention of leaving the city of Barcelona”.

City to swoop for Zakaria

Man City could move to sign Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Denis Zakaria, whose contract expires at the end of the season.

Zakaria has informed his club of his intentions to leave after five years, and Sports Illustrated reports that City could bring him in as a long-term replacement for Fernandinho.

Gladbach could opt to sell the midfielder this month in order to receive a nominal transfer fee rather than let him go for nothing at the end of the season.
