Lionel Messi wins record seventh Ballon d’Or: Darren Wells reports

Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino has issued a transfer plea to striker Kylian Mbappe as he became free to talk to other clubs.

The striker is out of contract at the Parc des Princes on 30 June and from 1 January he has been free to agree a pre-contract with other teams after PSG failed to progress talks on a new deal.

Mbappe has recently hinted at a move to Real Madrid and his most recent interview suggested that he is open to a move away from Paris, where he is out of contract this summer.

Real Madrid lodged a world record bid – which Sky Sports reported to be in excess of €220million – which received no response from the Ligue 1 club in the closing hours of the summer transfer window.

That led to PSG sporting director Leonardo calling for Real Madrid to be punished by the authorities over their pursuit of the player.

Mbappe’s contract at PSG expires in June

Mbappe has blossomed into one of Europe’s star talents and, having just celebrated his 23 rd birthday, could establish himself as the sport’s leading star for the next decade.

At PSG he has remained the highest-performing star in an attacking cast that includes Lionel Messi, Neymar, Mauro Icardi and Angel di Maria.

PSG boss Pochettino has now addressed the situation in a press conference on Sunday amid fresh concerns that Mbappe may be distracted by his impending contract expiry.

The Argentine coach said: “The contractual situations affect you when you do not have the maturity to manage them.

“Kylian has the maturity. The club wants him to stay a long time. It’s between the two parties.

“We hope Kylian will continue to have the same level of performance as always.”

PSG are still publicly claiming that they can agree a new contract with their superstar striker but with each passing week, that probability becomes increasingly less likely.

Sporting director Leonardo told an interview with Le JDD and Europe1, which was aired late last month: “If Mbappe decides to stay, he will stay because it is our wish.

“It is a complicated situation because we would like him to stay his whole life and we have to respect his position.

“I think there are still good opportunities to renew his contract. I believe in that.”

The PSG sporting director believes that the France international has developed into the best player in the world since joining the club from Monaco in the summer of 2017.

He added: “Mbappe is the best player in the world.

“People will think that we say that because we want to renew his contract, but no.

“It is beyond the interest of the club. At 22, almost 23, Kylian has reached an incredible maturity.”

The future of Mbappe looks set to intensify in the coming months – especially as PSG meet his potential next club Real Madrid in the Round of 16 in the Champions League in February.
