Thomas Tuchel reacts to Romelu Lukaku interview

Romelu Lukaku may be dropped by Thomas Tuchel for Chelsea’s crucial Premier League game against Liverpool.

Lukaku made headlines on Thursday by giving an interview with Italian media in which he claimed he is currently “not happy” at Chelsea.

Unsurprisingly, the comments have not gone down well at the club, who are preparing to face Liverpool at Stamford Bridge in Sunday’s 4.30pm kick-off.

“We don’t like it of course because it brings noise we don’t need and it is not helpful,” Tuchel said on Friday .

Tuchel went on to suggest that Lukaku’s interview with Sky Italia, which is understood to have taken place three weeks ago, had been blown out of proportion.

“We don’t want to make more out of it than it actually is,” the manager added.

“It’s very easy to take lines out of context, it’s very easy to shorten lines, make headlines then later realise it’s not so bad and not what he meant.”

However, Tuchel is said to be privately “livid” and is considering whether to drop Lukaku from his all-important starting line-up to face Jurgen Klopp’s side, according to The Guardian .

Kai Havertz is now back fit following a spell on the sidelines with Covid-19 and could replace the Belgian striker.

Chelsea desperately need to win against Liverpool after Manchester City opened up a 11-point gap at the top of the Premier League with a 2-1 win over Arsenal on Saturday.

The Blues have drawn four of their last five home league games 1-1 and therefore could do with Lukaku’s firepower up front.

The 28-year-old has seven goals in 18 appearances this season, but three of those strikes have come in his past four games.

Tuchel has been frustrated by the timing of Lukaku’s interview, with it coming in the wake of the damaging 1-1 draw against Brighton on Wednesday.

“We need a calm environment and focus and it does not help,” Tuchel admitted in his pre-match press conference.

“I don’t feel him unhappy. I feel the exact opposite. If you asked me yesterday morning I would say that he is absolutely fine. That’s why it’s a surprise but I am the wrong person to ask.

“We can take the time to try to understand what is going on because it does not reflect the daily work, the daily attitude, the daily behaviour Romelu shows here.”

He added: “It is not necessary to always be in harmony to be successful. You don’t have to hug each other and love each other every single day. Sometimes it is good to be on the edge.”
