Klopp makes title race admission after Liverpool lose at Leicester

Chelsea look to start the new year better than they ended the last one by picking up three points when they welcome title rivals Liverpool to Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The Blues dropped more points during their 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion in midweek, leaving them eight points behind league leaders Manchester City after just two wins from their last six games.

Liverpool had been on a much better run of form of late before a draw and a loss in their last two games, falling to a 1-0 defeat at Leicester City on Wednesday..

To add to this, a postponed Boxing Day fixture against Leeds United has seen them fall nine points behind Pep Guardiola’s side, but the Reds remain 3rd and just one point below their hosts.

Thomas Tuchel is experiencing yet another player absence crisis, while Jurgen Klopp could be missing a number of players of his own when the Reds travel to the capital.

Team news

Thomas Tuchel faces another selection dilemma after two further injuries in midweek and will have to stretch his resources for the visit of Liverpool.

Both Reece James (thigh) and Andreas Christensen (back) were withdrawn against Brighton on Wednesday and will miss out here, joining Ben Chilwell (ACL) on the sidelines who has been ruled out for the season.

The Blues are also likely to be without Ruben Loftus-Cheek (ankle) again, while Timo Werner (Covid-19) and Thiago Silva (hamstring) are both doubts.

Jurgen Klopp is hoping to be boosted by the returns of Thiago and Takumi Minamino for this game, after both missed out against Leicester due to minor muscle soreness.

Andrew Robertson remains suspended following his red card against Tottenham Hotspur a fortnight ago, while Divock Origi continues to suffer from a knee injury.

Nathaniel Phillips (head), Adrian (calf) and Harvey Elliott (ankle) are all out.
