When Did World War 2 Start?
The Second World War is considered to have started on September 1, 1939, the date when Germany invaded Poland. As a result of this invasion movement of Germany, England and France declared war against Germany and the Second World War officially started in 1939.
On the way to World War II, which took place between 1939 and 1945, Germany, one of the defeated states of the First World War, was faced with a major economic crisis. The signing of the Versailles Peace Treaty with the Entente Powers also put Germany in a difficult position militarily. As a result of all these negative conditions, Adolf Hitler became the German Chancellor in 1933 and he made an effort to arm himself. On the other hand, there was a similar situation in Italy, one of the victorious states of World War I. Despite being on the winning side, Benito Mussolini took an aggressive stance in Italy, who thought that what was promised to him did not come true. In the light of all this information, the tension in the world, which increased with Italy’s occupation of Abyssinia in 1935 and Japan’s occupation of China in 1937, reached its peak in 1939 with Germany’s invasion of Poland.
After the invasion of Poland, first France and the United Kingdom, then Australia and New Zealand declared war on Germany and World War II officially started in 1939. Since then, numerous battles have taken place between different forces in different parts of the world. By 1940, Germany, which had conquered almost all of Western Europe, had its sights set on the Soviet Union. In 1941, Germany invaded the Soviets, launching Operation Barbarossa. The German troops, who came as far as Moscow, reached the city of Stalingrad in 1942. But from this point on, things would not go as they had hoped for the Germans. Germany, which was helpless in the face of both the adverse winter conditions and the Soviet resistance, began to retreat. Germany surrendered in 1945 after the Russian troops following the Germans entered Berlin and the other allies ended the German occupation of France with the Normandy Landing.
